Tips for Rookie Sports Writers


TIPSUMMARY Know the game If you are writing about sports you have to know the game because you are not going to understand it when you are writing about it. You have to Do your research and lock down the basics of the sport and watch a few videos online to get a feel for the rhythm of the game in order to write about it. Befriend the media relations staff. it’s good to keep a good relation with someone in the media because you wanted to get as much as information as possible so if you are in as good terms as someone in the staff it will be easier to get if an athlete unexpectedly puts up career-high numbers and you need to ask for an exclusive interview of the post-match press conferences.Navigate the post-match press conference like a professional When in the press you want to be as confident as possible in order to hear the someanswers during the press conferences, so use your exclusive one-on-one to flesh out your unique angle and get some good quotes that no one else will have. . SittingSit near the front and at the end of an aisle where it’s easier for the microphone runner to get to you is a way to be professional and seem professional to others . Find your angle. find your angel kid basically finding the point to grab the attention of the readerto reader of the main point of the writing . Speak the language of action. Reading lots of sports writing will help you build your sporting vocabulary and familiarize you with your knowledge ofwith sports and the people who play them. Also you want to watch and understand as much you can so you can get your points right in your writing.
